Fida International has agreed to join hands with Christian aid agencies working in the region to deliver emergency aid to Myanmar (Burma). The organisations to join the relief effort so far are Convoy of Hope, Australia Global Aid Network, the United States Assemblies of God World Mission, Health Care Ministries, Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada and Full Gospel churches of Thailand. Fida also has as its long-term partner the Myanmar Assemblies of God church.
The first truckload with emergency supplies sent by the agencies is on its way from Thailand to Yangon and expected to arrive on Thursday. The load consists of rice noodles, soya milk, medicine for diarrhoea and plastic sheets. Also other medical supplies will be sent to the country. Another aid cargo on land is being prepared.

Fida’s and its partner agencies’ representatives will meet on site Thursday to find out about suitable means of aid delivery. So far Fida has given 12,000 euros of its own funds for the work and continues receiving emergency funds.

The situation in the Myanmar Irrawaddy Delta region is very serious. Various disease are expected to start spreading due to polluted drinking water and a lack of adequate nutrition, hygiene, health care and shelter. Rains worsen the situation. The access of aid workers and supplies to the worst hit delta area has been restricted. Need for aid increases also in the main city Yangon as refugees from the worst hit areas continue to flock to the city. According a UN estimation the death toll may rise above 100,000 and about two million people have been affected in the country.
